One year later, Mick Harvey explains why he left the Bad Seeds

”I had reached a point where I needed a change. It was time to move on,” says Harvey, who decided last August to leave the band, after first contemplating it in 1998. ”I had reached a similar point then, wondering if my role was as substantial as it should have been, but then my role picked up again. But recently, my role was more looking after the business side of things than an artistic role.” … Was he sad to end his relationship with the band? ”Not sad but disappointed at how things had evolved. They certainly affected the decision.” Knowing that he was winding up his time with the Bad Seeds meant Harvey has enjoyed remastering the band’s back catalogue for re-releases.  LINK.

WHITE LUNAR, the 2-CD compilation of soundtracks and previously unreleased material written by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis, will be out Sep 22 (on Mute Records).

Accompanying the soundtracks on the second disc are four pieces drawn from the Cave & Ellis archives, all named after craters: “Magma” is constructed from a chorus of Warren singing a pitch-shifted riff, “Zanstra” swarms like a storm of hornets besieging a submarine, “Halo” finds pastoral calm in the eager teeth of defeat and “Daedalus” rises sure as the sun, with dewy flute and fluttering piano motes, before a sudden fade. The sequence is conceived as a suite. “Listen to it as you might listen to an instrumental album” recommends Ellis, as “some kind of trip”. LINK

The Cat Piano, written by Eddie White and co-directed by White and Ari Gibson of The People’s Republic of Animation, is nominated for an ATOM (Australian Teachers of Media) Award. The 8.0 minute animated short narrated by Nick Cave, music composed by Benjamin Speed, won ‘Best Short Animation’ at the Melbourne International Film Festival on Aug 7th. The upcoming AFI (Australian Film Institute) screenings are: Melbourne – Sunday 6th September; Sydney – Sunday 13th September. The Cat Piano has been officially selected in KLIK! Amsterdam Animation Festival in The Netherlands. LINK

Sadly, the wonderful website devoted to Rowland S. Howard has been down for two years, something I and others here were unaware of.

 Recently, we received a request to help restore the site.   So far, the authors (who I do not know personally) say they’ve found most of the videos they need but they are looking for essays, interviews, rare photos, anecdotes or anything you can donate.
