Rowland S Howard Loses Battle With Cancer
Wednesday, December 30 2009 at 04:00 PM.
Australia’s music scene has lost a true icon with the reported passing of Rowland S Howard today (December 30).While no official statement has been made by management, close friends of the guitarist have confirmed reports that he lost his ongoing battle with liver cancer at Melbourne’s Austin Hospital this morning.
Howard, 50, was a former member of the Young Charlatans, The Boys Next Door (who later morphed into The Birthday Party) and These Immortal Souls. He penned the underground hit ‘Shivers’ for The Boys Next Door and memorably dueted with Lydia Lunch on Lee Hazlewood’s ‘Some Velvet Morning’.
In 1999, Howard released his debut solo album, Teenage Snuff Film, which quickly became a cult classic. Its long-awaited follow-up Pop Crimes was released in October this year, sparking a run of well-received shows and garnering widespread critical acclaim (it topped M+N’s annual Critics Poll earlier this month).
Howard’s ongoing battles with liver cancer recently forced the cancellation of several shows including a spot on the Homebake and Summer Tones bills.
In his final interview with M+N, Howard said he was enjoying the renewed interest in his career. “It’s very gratifying,” he said. “When I play live, nobody calls out for ‘Shivers’ any more, because they are too young to have any kind of historical attachment to it … It’s peculiar in a way, it just seemed to happen on its own accord. And it’s great, because no longer do I look out from the stage and just see a bunch of ageing ex-junkies.” Go to article

Some 500 people attended.
The sight of Mick Harvey as a pall bearer brought renewed tears. A friend to the end, God Bless him. A very sad time for Rowland’s family, friends, and fans. RIP

Picture 6 of 8 from The Age’s article is heartbreaking. :\ They all are. Behind Mick and Harry are JP Shilo and, possibly, Conrad Standish.
Agreed. OMG. :\
That one reminds me of Raphael’s painting of Aristotle and Plato. The contrast is gorgeous in a sorrowful way. ):
I haven’t written anything in response of this until now. I really don’t know what to write. Of course I know who he was, but that’s almost about it, I haven’t listened to any of his music (not even tbp). In any case it’s sad, really sad when someone dies at that age.
so sad
he was one of my favourite musicians
Just got this sad news. Rowland’s musicianship and lyrics can be described with no less term than brilliant. His contribution was massive and he was underrated most of his career. We all know he is in part why Nick is who he is as a musician and performer today. Peace to his soul.

Thank you, Edie, this was on my to-do list. I’m terribly sorry for you ladies at OTB and LJ. What more can one say to a grieving heart? There are no words.
Folks, a gentle reminder that Rowland’s fan site, Outta the Black, has a news page, Into the Ether, with a list of Rowland tributes and more.

Very sad to hear this, rest in peace Rowland
First Lux and now this
It makes me sad, Rowland was always a big influence to me.
This was a sad year for deathrock and post-punk but it was very cool how Rowland kept on performing despite his condition. He was always so optimistic and cool on-stage. You can here it in alot of his live bootleg suff how he would joke with the crowd and have fun.
RIP Rowland

Temporary post, sharing a majority of his discography.
I’ve never truly met the man (asking for an autograph doesn’t really count, does it), but I’ll miss him so much.
Also, since this is Nick Fixes, here is a duet between Rowland and Nick – http://www.mediafire.com/?wyzyyfoum3y
Oh maaan
I am a bit shocked, even if i knew that he was very ill.
Thank you man for the music you left us. I never forget seeing my first bp-video and being really exited about you and your guitar-playing. I loved you from that day on. Rest in peace!
I really suck at expressing myself about things like this, but every time I go somewhere and see this news it’s a little shock in the belly. . .so sad. I was hoping to be able to give that man a crushing hug one day. Things seemed to be going so well for him otherwise. Sucks for his family, it seems like they stayed close. RIP. If there’s an afterlife he’s unfortunately got plenty of company. . .
RRR, Melbourne Community Radio is playing tributes of Rowland’s music all day (almost every half hour just at the moment), and no doubt will be for a few weeks to come yet. A big loss to the music community, an especially big loss to the Melbourne music community.
Thanks for the links everyone.
Anyone who cares to drop a link (as Wallaby has done) feel free to do so. All links become ‘live’ once you submit your comment. No worries about HTML code.
Best wishes on this saddest of occasions,
Morgan
It wasn’t coding if you’re referring to my second comment. Just to be clear, the first mp3 download won’t work on iTunes (and has been removed). Second will.

RIP Rowland, what a wonderful legacy you have left us. No more waves ‘hello’ passing you on my way to work anymore. Condolences to your family and close friends.
