PUSH THE SKY AWAY : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

OUT FEBRUARY 18, 2013 on Mute.

“Well, if I were to use that threadbare metaphor of albums being like children, then Push The Sky Away is the ghost-baby in the incubator and Warren’s loops are its tiny, trembling heart-beat.” Nick Cave

Push the Sky Away was produced by Nick Launay and recorded at La Fabrique, a recording studio based in a 19th Century mansion in the South of France, where the walls of the main studio are lined with an immense collection of classical vinyl.

“I enter the studio with a handful of ideas, unformed and pupal; it’s the Bad Seeds that transform them into things of wonder. Ask anyone who has seen them at work. They are unlike any other band on earth for pure, instinctive inventiveness.” Nick Cave

  1. First impressions after one listen on the NPR stream:

    Hauntingly beautiful.

Echoes of The Boatman’s Call but with a film-score soundscape and some lyrics with a Grinderman influence. And yet, having said that, very different in many ways from anything in Nick’s catalogue previously. Finishing Jubilee Street is certainly a very different sound for the Bad Seeds!

Fits together very well as an album. The female backing vocals work very well.

Warren’s influence on the sound is very much to the fore.

I am going to enjoy exploring it further; very impressed with the first listen.
Favourite tracks so for: We No Who U R, Wide Lovely Eyes, Water’s Edge and Higgs Boson Blues.

Look forward to hearing it live on Sunday.

  2. The new album from Crime and the City Solution (American Twilight) will be released on Mute records on 25th March – now available to pre-order from Mute, play, Amazon etc.

A single (Goddess) is released in early February.

Mick Harvey may be guesting with Crime on their three Australian dates in Feb according to his website.

With new albums from Nick and Crime, 2013 is shaping up very nicely. Now we just need some UK and European tour dates for both!

  3. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – We No Who U R

My honest opinion? It’s a lovely song but by no means on a par with his prior work, either lyric-wise or melodically. It seems a strange choice as the first single from such a highly anticipated album. Goes without saying that I still love Nick but I can’t say that I *love* the new Bad Seeds sound – if this is any example. Wait for the album like everyone else, I guess. (I keep hoping that I will be surprised and perhaps blown away.)

  4. I was wondering, you said the Neubauten DVD is not available in the US. Do you already got your hands on it? :D If you wanna have it before Christmas, don´t hesitate to email me :)

Thank you for the offer, darling! I plan to get it in January.
Glad to hear all is well with you and Mum. Kisses!
